The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 500 litres of products suspected to be illegally sourced Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and substances believed to be Cannabis sativa during an operation in Folu Community, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
The operation was conducted by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Lekki as part of the Navy’s ongoing efforts to tackle the illegal trade and storage of petroleum products and the proliferation of illicit drugs within its area of responsibility.
The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this on Wednesday.
According to Folorunsho, naval personnel discovered the suspected illegally sourced petroleum products and narcotic substances during the operation. However, the suspects reportedly fled the scene before they could be apprehended.
He said the recovered items were secured and transported to the naval base for further investigation and necessary action in accordance with established procedures.
Folorunsho said the operation underscored the Nigerian Navy’s continued commitment to combating criminal activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s economic interests and threatening public safety and security, particularly within the maritime environment.
He added that the Navy would intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across its areas of responsibility to deter illegal oil-related activities, illicit trafficking and other forms of criminal enterprise.
“The interception forms part of the Nigerian Navy’s broader campaign against economic sabotage, illicit trafficking and other threats to Nigeria’s maritime security,” Folorunsho said.
The latest operation further highlights the Navy’s ongoing efforts to protect the country’s maritime domain while supporting the fight against economic sabotage and other activities that could undermine national security.
