The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GQ Hotel and Suites, Asaba, Mr. Uche Anthony Maduaka, has been honoured with the prestigious African Game Changer Award and formally notified of his inclusion in the forthcoming 2026 edition of the 100 African Game Changers Compendium, a continental publication that celebrates exceptional Africans making significant contributions to development, entrepreneurship, innovation, and social transformation.

The award was presented by a delegation from Fresh Facts Magazine in collaboration with the African Network for Accountability (ANFA), Ghana, during a special recognition visit to the hospitality entrepreneur in Asaba, Delta State.

Speaking during the presentation, the Publisher of Fresh Facts Magazine Comr Monday Ojomah, described Maduaka as an outstanding entrepreneur whose contributions to hospitality development, job creation, business growth, and community advancement have earned him recognition among Africa’s most impactful leaders.

According to the Publisher, the African Game Changer Award is reserved for individuals whose vision, leadership, and commitment to excellence are transforming industries and positively impacting lives across the continent.

“Through his visionary leadership of GQ Apartment and other hospitality investments, Mr. Uche Maduaka has demonstrated that hospitality is not merely about providing accommodation but about creating experiences, promoting excellence, generating employment, and contributing meaningfully to economic growth,” the Publisher stated.

The award presentation also marked Maduaka’s official inclusion in the 2026 100 African Game Changers Compendium, which is scheduled for launch in Accra, Ghana, in November 2026.

From Humble Beginnings to Hospitality Success

In an interview shortly after receiving the award, Maduaka expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as both unexpected and deeply motivating.

“My name is Uche Anthony Maduaka. I am from Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State. I am married with three children and currently serve as the Managing Director of GQ Hotel and Suites,” he said.

The entrepreneur revealed that his journey into the hospitality industry happened almost by chance after exploring several other business ventures that failed to provide the fulfilment he desired.

“It started like a joke. Before now, I ventured into other businesses, but I wasn’t getting satisfaction. I have always been a hospitality person. When I decided to return home to Asaba, I saw an opportunity and ventured into the business,” he explained.

According to him, the venture began with the leasing and operation of GQ Suites before expanding into other hospitality investments.

“Our dream is to have as many as ten hotels in Asaba under our brand. Presently, we employ about 40 staff members across our hospitality businesses,” he disclosed.

Challenges in the Hospitality Industry

While expressing optimism about the future of the hospitality sector, Maduaka acknowledged that operators continue to face significant challenges, particularly in the areas of electricity supply and the broader economic environment.

“The business has prospects, but there are challenges too, especially electricity. The present economic situation is affecting the hospitality sector significantly, but we are still able to manage and break even,” he noted.

He explained that foreign exchange fluctuations and rising operational costs have placed additional pressure on businesses across Nigeria.

“The economic situation has affected forex and business generally. There are months when you make profit and months when you don’t. Hospitality is not just about profit. You must keep your customers comfortable and satisfied. Sometimes, you have to keep injecting funds and praying for better days,” he said.

Recognition Inspires Greater Commitment

Reacting to his nomination for the 2026 African Game Changers Compendium, Maduaka said the honour has inspired him to work even harder.

“I feel very happy to be nominated. Sometimes, you work without knowing that somebody somewhere is noticing your efforts. I least expected this award and nomination. It has given me more reasons to work harder,” he stated.

He added that the recognition would strengthen his commitment to delivering excellent customer service and maintaining high professional standards.

“This award is going to motivate me to do better. Customer satisfaction has always been our priority, and we will continue striving for excellence,” he said.

Advice to Nigerian Youths

Addressing the growing culture of instant wealth among young people, the hotel executive urged Nigerian youths to embrace patience, discipline, and hard work.

“The message I have for the youths is simple: hard work and patience. When I started, many people expected immediate success, but my parents taught me that hard work pays, even if the reward does not come immediately,” he said.

According to him, one of Nigeria’s greatest challenges today is the growing obsession with quick wealth.

“A lot of people want to make it, but they don’t want to sacrifice. There is no shortcut to success. Whether in hospitality or any other business, you must give it time, nurture it, remain dedicated, and stay focused,” he advised.

A Legacy of Good Works

When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave behind, Maduaka responded without hesitation.

“I want people to remember me for my good works, honesty, and accountability. Those are the values that matter most to me,” he said.

The recognition of Mr. Uche Maduaka adds another remarkable story to the growing list of distinguished Africans selected for inclusion in the 2026 100 African Game Changers Compendium, a publication dedicated to celebrating visionary leaders whose contributions continue to shape the future of Africa through enterprise, innovation, and service to humanity.
