At the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters in Awka, the mood on Thursday, September 11, 2025, was both solemn and resolute. Senior officers of the Command — Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers — filed into the conference hall for what was billed as a strategic meeting with the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD.

The gathering was designed to sharpen operational strategies, but it quickly became more than a routine briefing. It was also a moment of remembrance and reassurance, where the sacrifices of officers who paid the ultimate price were brought to the forefront.

Strategy and Security First

Opening the meeting, CP Orutugu reviewed the Command’s operational framework, urging his officers to strengthen intelligence-driven policing, maintain discipline, and deepen collaboration with community stakeholders. He directed commanders to step up patrols, surveillance, and intelligence sharing.

“We cannot afford complacency,” he told the officers. “Our constitutional mandate is clear — to protect lives and property. Professionalism, visibility, and strong partnerships with the public are the keys to sustaining peace in Anambra.”

A Human Moment: Remembering the Fallen

The most moving part of the day came when 38 families of fallen officers were invited forward. CP Orutugu personally handed out cheques worth ₦59,186,177.62 under the Inspector-General of Police’s Group Life Insurance and Family Welfare Scheme.

For many families, it was bittersweet — a reminder of their loss, yet also a gesture that their loved ones had not been forgotten. One widow, clutching her young son as she received the cheque, whispered that the support would help her keep him in school. Another beneficiary, the brother of a late officer, described the presentation as “a dignified recognition of sacrifice.”

“These cheques are more than figures on paper,” CP Orutugu remarked. “They represent the nation’s gratitude to men who stood in the gap for others. Their courage will never be erased from our history.”

Beyond the Cheques

The Commissioner went a step further, announcing additional cash support to the family of an Inspector who died while repelling an insurgent attack in Aguata. “His bravery saved lives that night. We owe it to his memory to stand by his family,” he said.

Commitment to Ndi Anambra

As the meeting drew to a close, CP Orutugu reassured Ndi Anambra of the Command’s unwavering dedication to law, order, and public safety. He appealed to residents to continue supporting the Police with credible information.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” he noted. “The people are our greatest allies in this fight against crime.”

The day ended not just with strategies for stronger policing but with the poignant reminder that behind every badge is a family, and behind every fallen hero is a story of sacrifice.
