PORT HARCOURT — Residents of Rivers State have commended the Commander of the Rivers State Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), CSP Julian Wealth Igbudu, and his men for demonstrating compassion and humanity by distributing food and soft drinks to destitute persons on the streets of Port Harcourt.

The commendations followed a viral video circulating online showing the police officers providing food and soft drinks to vulnerable individuals, an act that has attracted widespread public admiration and renewed calls for a more people-oriented approach to policing in Nigeria.

In the video, members of the public were seen showering encomiums on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju Adewole, for fostering an atmosphere in which police officers can demonstrate concern for the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Many residents described the gesture as a refreshing example of community-oriented policing, noting that acts of kindness and humanitarian service could help strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

According to some residents, if more police officers across the country embraced similar initiatives and treated members of the public with compassion, mutual suspicion between the police and citizens would significantly reduce.

They argued that policing should go beyond crime prevention, arresting suspects and maintaining law and order to include building relationships with communities, supporting vulnerable people and demonstrating a genuine commitment to public welfare.

Some residents also noted that the gesture was consistent with CSP Igbudu’s record of humanitarian engagement, recalling that he had demonstrated similar acts of kindness during his tenure as Commander of the C4i Octopus Strike Force.

They described his approach as evidence that security personnel can combine their professional responsibilities with humanitarian service, particularly in reaching out to disadvantaged members of society who are often neglected.

The commendations have further highlighted the importance of leadership, discipline and personal initiative in shaping the relationship between the police and the communities they serve.

For many observers, the distribution of food and soft drinks may appear to be a modest gesture, but its significance lies in the message it conveys: that law enforcement officers are not only responsible for protecting lives and property but can also play a positive role in promoting dignity, compassion and social inclusion.

The development has also renewed public calls for police formations across Nigeria to strengthen community engagement through humanitarian outreach programmes, public education and other initiatives capable of bridging the gap between security agencies and the people.

While residents continue to applaud CSP Igbudu and his men, the gesture has served as a reminder that public trust is built not only through effective security operations but also through everyday acts of service that demonstrate respect for human dignity.

The residents expressed hope that the example set by the VCRU commander and his team would inspire other police officers to adopt similar people-centred initiatives, thereby strengthening public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and fostering a more cordial relationship between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
