A police-led joint security team attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Aguata, has rescued a kidnapped Nigerian during a routine visibility patrol in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of January 15, 2026, around the Isulo axis, led to the safe recovery of the victim, who was found after reportedly escaping from his captors’ hideout.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the rescued man is a Nigerian citizen and native of Obinagu–Isikweachi, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, but currently resides in South Africa. He told security operatives that he was abducted on January 1, 2026, from his hometown by a gang of six armed men, who allegedly operated with their faces covered.
The victim disclosed that his abductors demanded a ransom of ₦40 million from his wife and relatives. However, through what security sources described as a “bold and timely escape,” he managed to flee from the kidnappers’ den, eventually running into the joint patrol team.
He was immediately debriefed by security operatives and has since been reunited with his family, the police said.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command confirmed that operatives are now acting on actionable intelligence provided by the victim to locate and dismantle the criminal hideout and arrest the suspects involved.
“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and sustained visibility patrols to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state,” the statement added.
Residents React
The rescue has drawn widespread reactions from residents across Anambra State, many of whom praised the police and other security agencies for what they described as renewed seriousness in tackling kidnapping and violent crime.
A trader in Isulo, Mrs. Chinyere Okafor, said the development has boosted community confidence.
“Seeing the police on constant patrol and now rescuing someone alive gives us hope. Criminals are beginning to know that Anambra is no longer safe for them,” she said.
Similarly, a youth leader in Orumba South, Mr. Ifunanya Nwoye, commended the joint security approach.
“This shows that visibility patrols are not just for show. They are saving lives. We urge the government to sustain this tempo,” he noted.
However, some residents called for deeper community engagement and faster arrests.
“We are happy about the rescue, but we want to see the kidnappers caught and prosecuted,” said Mr. Emeka Umeh, a resident of Aguata. “That is what will truly deter others.”
Sustaining the Momentum
Security analysts say the incident underscores the importance of routine patrols, inter-agency collaboration, and intelligence sharing in curbing criminal activities. As investigations continue, the Anambra State Police Command has assured residents that further updates will be communicated as operations progress.
For now, the successful rescue stands as another signal in the state’s ongoing campaign to deny criminal elements safe haven and restore public confidence in security governance.
