In a major breakthrough that underscores the growing effectiveness of community policing in Anambra State, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Gender Unit, Awka, have arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Chigbo Umeugokwe, for alleged armed robbery and defilement in Achina, Aguata Local Government Area.

According to confirmed information from the Anambra State Police Command, the suspect—who hails from Umuezeiyi Village in Achina—was apprehended on November 11, 2025, through a joint operation involving police investigators and members of the local community security outfit.

The arrest followed a disturbing incident that occurred on October 29, 2025, when the suspect allegedly stormed a shop in the community armed with a locally made single-barrel gun and a small axe. He reportedly disguised himself with a red polo shirt converted into a face mask, abducted a 13-year-old girl, and took her into a nearby bush where he forcefully defiled her. He also allegedly stole the sum of ₦30,000 from the shop.

Police authorities confirmed that the suspect gave a voluntary confessional statement during interrogation. The following exhibits were recovered from him:

  • A locally made single-barrel gun
  • A small axe
  • The red polo shirt used as a face mask

The Command has fixed Wednesday, November 19, 2025, for the suspect’s arraignment in court as part of its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and reinforcing accountability among offenders.

A Testament to the Commissioner’s Proactive Leadership

This latest breakthrough further highlights the proactive leadership style of the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, whose embrace of community policing continues to record positive results across the state. Under his watch, the Command has strengthened its engagement with local security groups, vigilante networks, and traditional structures—an approach that has led to faster intelligence gathering, improved crime response, and a rise in coordinated arrests such as this one.

Security watchers note that this synergy between the police and grassroots stakeholders has not only boosted public confidence but has also positioned Anambra as a model for community-driven security management in Nigeria.

The CP’s consistent success in dismantling criminal networks, rescuing victims, and preventing violent crimes has earned him multiple awards and commendations from reputable organizations both within and outside the country. These recognitions reflect the Command’s renewed commitment to professionalism, collaboration, and justice delivery.

As preparations for the suspect’s arraignment continue, the Anambra State Police Command reaffirms its resolve to sustain these efforts, deepen community ties, and ensure that residents across the state continue to enjoy enhanced safety and protection
