Asaba — The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 33 suspects before a Magistrate Court in Asaba over offences linked to violent disturbances, public nuisance, and drug-related activities recorded during New Year’s Eve security operations in the state capital.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, ANIPR, said the arrests were made at different locations across Asaba during coordinated patrols aimed at maintaining public order as residents ushered in the New Year.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed prima facie cases against the suspects, leading to their arraignment before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba.

“Following arraignment, three suspects were remanded in custody, while the others were granted bail by the court, pending the continuation of prosecution,” the police spokesman stated.

Police Dismiss Alleged Church Arrest Claims

Reacting to reports circulating in parts of the media, the Delta Police Command dismissed claims that a church worshipper was arrested or re-arrested for speaking to journalists, describing the narrative as false and misleading.

SP Anipr clarified that the individual repeatedly referenced in the reports was arrested alongside two others in a Mercedes Benz GLK vehicle parked on a street opposite Pinnacle Hotel, Asaba.

“The suspects were allegedly purchasing illicit drugs from a suspected dealer when they were arrested. Incriminating exhibits were recovered at the scene,” he said.

Suspect Linked to Sister Security Agency

The police disclosed that one of the suspects is a member of a sister security agency and was granted bail and released to his institution, with assurances that his appearance in court would be secured through official channels.

SP Anipr emphasized that granting bail does not terminate investigation nor imply innocence, stressing that investigation and prosecution remain ongoing.

Call to Disregard Misinformation

The Delta State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard what it described as sensationalism and misinformation, warning that such reports could undermine lawful police operations.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, due process, and the rule of law, while pledging to continue maintaining public order and safety across Delta State.
