How a family rooted in Ede built a remarkable legacy across politics, business, education, philanthropy and entertainment — with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s latest electoral victory adding a new chapter

Before Davido became one of Africa’s biggest music stars, before Dr. Adedeji Adeleke became a prominent businessman and educationist, and before Senator Ademola Adeleke emerged as Governor of Osun State, there was already an Adeleke story.

It was a story rooted in Ede, shaped by public service, business, education, philanthropy and community influence, and passed from one generation to another.

Today, that story has acquired another significant chapter.

On August 16, 2026, Ademola Adeleke was declared winner of the Osun State governorship election, securing 511,067 votes against 444,815 recorded by his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress. The victory gave Adeleke a second consecutive term as governor and further entrenched the family name in the political history of Osun State.

For a family whose public profile stretches well beyond politics, the victory is more than an electoral statistic. It represents the latest expression of a dynasty whose influence has evolved across generations and across industries.

The Story Begins With Ayoola Adeleke

Long before the Adeleke name became associated with contemporary Nigerian politics and Afrobeats, the family had already established itself in public life.

The late Senator Raji Ayoola Adeleke, the family patriarch, was a businessman, community figure and politician who represented the old Oyo State in the Second Republic Senate under the Unity Party of Nigeria.

His political orientation was associated with the progressive tradition of the era, and his public career helped establish the foundation upon which subsequent generations of the family would build.

The significance of Ayoola Adeleke’s legacy is not merely that he entered politics. It is that he created a family culture in which public service, education, enterprise and community engagement could coexist.

That foundation would soon produce a remarkable succession.

Isiaka Adeleke: The First Governor

If Ayoola Adeleke laid the political foundation, his eldest son, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, transformed it into a formidable political legacy.

Isiaka Adeleke became the first civilian governor of the newly created Osun State, winning election in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party. He was only 37 at the time.

His emergence was historic.

Osun State had been created in 1991 from the old Oyo State, and the election that produced Isiaka Adeleke as its first elected civilian governor gave the Adeleke family a place in the political history of the new state. The Osun State Government itself records him as the state’s first civilian governor, serving from January 1992 to November 1993.

His administration also left physical marks on the young state, including road projects and other infrastructure initiatives that have continued to feature in discussions of his tenure.

Isiaka later returned to the Senate, representing Osun West, and remained a powerful political figure until his death in 2017.

But perhaps his most enduring political legacy was the influence he exerted on his younger brother, Ademola.

Governor Ademola Adeleke has repeatedly acknowledged Isiaka as a mentor and guide whose political career influenced his own journey. In a tribute marking Isiaka’s posthumous 70th birthday, he described his late brother as both a mentor and benefactor whose life of service helped shape his own path.

Adedeji Adeleke: Building the Business and Educational Empire

While Isiaka was building a political reputation, another member of the family was pursuing a different path.

Dr. Adedeji Adeleke developed a career in business, finance, philanthropy and education.

His story demonstrates one of the most distinctive features of the Adeleke legacy: the family’s influence was never confined to politics.

Adedeji studied finance and later obtained an MBA and PhD in International Business. He subsequently built a business career and became associated with Pacific Holdings.

But perhaps one of his most significant contributions has been in education.

He established the Springtime Development Foundation in 1996 to support disadvantaged Nigerians through higher education. He later secured approval for Adeleke University in Ede, which received federal approval in 2011, with Adedeji becoming its pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.

The university represents a different kind of political and social legacy — one based not on electoral power but on institution-building.

In that sense, the Adeleke story is not simply about individuals occupying prominent positions. It is also about institutions designed to outlive individuals.

Then Came Davido

And then, from another branch of the family, came David Adedeji Adeleke — Davido.

His emergence transformed the Adeleke name from a largely Nigerian political and business brand into a globally recognisable cultural name.

Davido became one of the most influential figures in African popular music, carrying the Adeleke surname into the international entertainment industry.

His father, Adedeji Adeleke, was already an established businessman and educationist. His uncle, Isiaka, had been a governor and senator. Another uncle, Ademola, was entering Nigerian politics.

Davido’s success therefore did not create the Adeleke dynasty, but it gave the family an entirely new avenue of global visibility.

The political and entertainment branches of the family would later become particularly visible during Ademola Adeleke’s political campaigns, when Davido publicly supported his uncle.

The relationship has remained deeply familial. Ademola has described Davido not simply as his cousin but as a son, recalling that the younger generation of the family, including his own children, grew up together.

That unusual convergence — a governor and a global music star from the same extended family — has made the Adelekes one of Nigeria’s most recognisable modern family dynasties.

Ademola Adeleke: From Brother’s Shadow to His Own Political Identity

Yet Ademola Adeleke’s story deserves to be examined independently.

For years, his political identity was inevitably connected to his elder brother, Isiaka.

When Isiaka died in April 2017, Ademola entered the political arena more prominently, eventually winning the Osun West Senate seat in a by-election.

That victory became the launching pad for his governorship ambition.

His first major attempt came in 2018, when he contested the Osun governorship election. The contest was extremely close and became the subject of prolonged legal and political controversy.

Four years later, Adeleke returned.

In 2022, he defeated the incumbent governor, Gboyega Oyetola, winning 403,371 votes to Oyetola’s 375,027.

The victory was significant because it turned what had once appeared to be a family political aspiration into an actual governorship.

But the 2026 election has taken the story further.

2026: The Victory That Strengthens the Dynasty

Adeleke’s latest victory came in a much different political environment.

This time, he was not simply a challenger seeking to break into the state’s political establishment. He was an incumbent asking voters for another mandate.

The result was a decisive electoral victory.

With 511,067 votes, Adeleke defeated APC’s Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.

The margin was 66,252 votes.

The result means that, barring any successful legal challenge, Adeleke will continue as governor for another term — extending the family’s direct political presence at the highest elected level in Osun.

The APC has, however, indicated that it is consulting its legal team over the results and may explore available legal avenues.

For Adeleke and his supporters, the result nevertheless represents a powerful political endorsement.

It also changes the historical conversation.

The first chapter was Isiaka Adeleke becoming Osun’s first civilian governor.

The second was Ademola Adeleke succeeding in 2022 after the disappointment of 2018.

The latest chapter is Ademola winning re-election and becoming the latest member of the family to secure a renewed mandate from Osun voters.

A Family of Different Talents

Perhaps what makes the Adeleke story unusual is the breadth of its influence.

Consider the different fields represented across generations:

Politics:
Ayoola Adeleke served as a Second Republic senator. Isiaka Adeleke became Osun’s first civilian governor and later a senator. Ademola Adeleke followed as senator and governor.

Business:
Adedeji Adeleke built a substantial business career and became one of the family’s most prominent entrepreneurs.

Education:
Adedeji’s establishment of Adeleke University represents the family’s investment in institutional development and human capital.

Philanthropy:
The Adeleke family has long been associated with support for education, community development and disadvantaged people.

Entertainment:
Davido carried the family name into global music and popular culture.

Community and traditional influence:
The family has remained deeply connected to Ede and its social and traditional structures.

It is this diversity that separates the Adeleke story from a conventional political dynasty.

The family did not build its influence through government alone.

The Power of Family Continuity

There is another element to the story that is often overlooked: continuity.

In many prominent Nigerian families, influence can disappear when a major political figure dies or leaves office.

The Adeleke experience has been different.

When Isiaka died in 2017, his political influence did not disappear. His younger brother Ademola stepped into the political arena.

When the family name became associated with politics, Adedeji continued developing the business and educational side of the family.

And as the older generation established its reputation, the younger generation — including Davido — expanded the Adeleke identity into new cultural territory.

That continuity was on full display at a family wedding in Ede in June 2026, when Adedeji Adeleke performed the traditional role of father of the bride for the daughter of the late Isiaka Adeleke, a symbolic moment that reflected the continuing cohesion of the extended family.

The Burden of a Famous Name

But a famous family name can also become a burden.

For Ademola Adeleke, every political achievement is measured against the accomplishments of his father and elder brother.

He carries the memory of the first civilian governor of Osun.

He operates alongside a brother whose business and educational achievements have given the family enormous economic influence.

He is related to a musician whose international fame often places the Adeleke name in global headlines.

And now, after winning another four-year mandate, his own record will increasingly become the benchmark against which future generations of the family are judged.

That is perhaps the greatest challenge of the Adeleke legacy.

Inheritance can provide a platform, but it cannot permanently substitute for performance.

Beyond the Dancing Governor

For much of his political career, Ademola Adeleke has attracted considerable public attention for his energetic personality and dancing.

That image has become part of Nigerian popular culture.

But beneath the viral videos is a more complicated political story: a man born into a politically influential family who entered politics through the shadow of an elder brother, suffered an electoral setback, returned to win the governorship, built his own political identity and has now secured another mandate.

The 2026 victory therefore provides an opportunity to look beyond the entertainment headlines.

The man who was once introduced primarily as Isiaka Adeleke’s younger brother is now himself a two-term governor.

And the nephew of the governor who became a global music phenomenon has simultaneously helped make the Adeleke name famous far beyond the boundaries of Osun.

A Legacy Still Being Written

The Adeleke story is ultimately a story of succession — but not succession in one direction.

From Ayoola Adeleke’s political career came Isiaka’s governorship.

From Isiaka came a political tradition that influenced Ademola.

From Adedeji came a business and educational legacy.

From the next generation came Davido’s global entertainment success.

And from Ademola’s latest electoral victory comes another chapter in the family’s political history.

The remarkable point is that these achievements have occurred in completely different arenas.

One generation occupied the Senate.

Another occupied the governor’s office.

Another built businesses and an institution of higher learning.

Another conquered the African and international music scene.

Together, they have created something larger than the achievement of any single Adeleke.

That is why the significance of Ademola Adeleke’s 2026 victory extends beyond the result sheet.

It places another milestone in a family story that began generations ago and continues to evolve.

For Osun State, the immediate question is what Governor Adeleke will do with the mandate he has just received.

For the Adeleke family, the larger question is what the next generation will do with a name that has already become synonymous with politics, enterprise, education, philanthropy and entertainment.

The answer, as history suggests, may come from an entirely different direction.

The Adeleke legacy is still being written.
