The Delta State Police Command has launched a manhunt for Victor Ojei, popularly known as “Wong Box”, a self-acclaimed human rights activist, who is wanted for alleged assault occasioning harm, threat to life, and threatening violence.
According to the Command, Ojei was arrested on August 14, 2025, for multiple offences contrary to Sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code. He was granted bail on the same day but has since absconded, refusing to report back to the police for further investigation.
Police authorities explained that the case against Ojei stemmed from an incident on May 29, 2025, when staff of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) visited his residence on Anyameluhor Street, Asaba, to disconnect power supply over an outstanding bill of ₦4,870,780.
The Command alleged that Ojei, upon sighting the technicians, attacked them with a cutlass and forced them to reconnect his electricity supply. Video evidence obtained by the police reportedly shows the suspect brandishing the weapon and issuing several threats, including:
- Ordering the BEDC staff to reconnect his house.
- Shouting “I go cut una” and “I will cut you, and nothing go happen.”
- Calling on an associate identified only as Maduka to bring him an iron.
- Declaring himself as “Wong Box of Delta State” and claiming to be a politician.
During the altercation, one of the BEDC staff, who was pregnant at the time, fell and sustained injuries. She was reportedly hospitalized for more than two weeks.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, vowed that Ojei would be re-arrested and prosecuted, stressing that “nobody is above the law, and the suspect is not an exception.”
The police have urged members of the public with useful information on the suspect’s whereabouts to assist in ensuring he is brought to justice.
