Police Ban Use of Vehicles without Number Plates
As preparations heighten for the November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship election, the State Police Command has issued a stern warning against the use of vehicles without number plates or those with covered registration numbers.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, minps, PhD, made this known in a statement issued through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in Awka. He described the practice as a serious security threat capable of undermining the peace and safety of residents, especially at this sensitive period.
According to the Commissioner, criminals often take advantage of unregistered or obscured vehicles to perpetrate crimes, evade detection, or cause disruption, adding that the Command would not condone any act that could compromise public safety before, during, or after the election.
“Henceforth, vehicles without registration numbers or with covered plates will be impounded, and their owners prosecuted in accordance with existing laws,” CP Orutugu warned.
The Police Chief has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders to intensify patrols, mount strategic stop-and-search operations, and enforce full compliance with this directive across the state.
He also urged residents—particularly motorists—to cooperate with security agencies by obeying all traffic and security regulations, and to promptly report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station.
