The streets of Enugu are breathing a little easier after the State Police Command dismantled a notorious syndicate of kidnappers and car thieves that had terrorised residents for months. In a major breakthrough, operatives arrested four suspects and recovered 15 stolen vehicles traced across Enugu, Nsukka, Anambra, and Rivers States.
The announcement came on September 11, 2025, during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters, GRA, Enugu, where Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, displayed some of the recovered vehicles before journalists.
A Syndicate with a Ruthless Pattern
According to CP Giwa, the gang specialised in abducting commercial and private drivers, forcing them to withdraw funds from their bank accounts before vanishing with their vehicles.
“The gang was behind multiple kidnappings of drivers, whom they abducted to unknown locations, withdrew funds from their accounts, and made away with their vehicles,” the Commissioner disclosed.
For many drivers in the state, the news brought a wave of relief. “Each time I picked up a night passenger, I would pray it wasn’t my last trip,” said Chinedu, a commercial cab driver at Enugu’s Holy Ghost Park. “Hearing that they have caught these people is like a burden lifted.”
The GRA Kidnap That Sparked a Manhunt
The syndicate’s daring methods came to national attention in May 2025, when a man driving a Mercedes Benz Jeep was abducted around the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Enugu, at about 9:00 p.m.
Recounting the incident, CP Giwa revealed how his immediate directive set off a tactical manhunt.
“Following my directive, Tactical Teams were deployed to track and apprehend the criminals. The operatives successfully rescued the victim, neutralized one of the gang members, while others escaped in the victim’s SUV, which was later recovered.”
Police also recovered a locally made double-barrel pistol loaded with two live cartridges and a green Nissan vehicle used during the operation.
The rescued victim, who asked not to be named, described the ordeal as “the most frightening hours of my life.” He added: “I thought I would never see my family again. The police came through for me, and I’ll never forget that.”
Security Through Collaboration
CP Giwa was quick to acknowledge that the victory was not achieved by the Police alone. He attributed the success to the support of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, as well as the security-driven leadership of the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
“These operational achievements would not have been possible without the invaluable support and leadership of the Inspector-General of Police. I also acknowledge the unwavering commitment of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose security-focused leadership has provided the enabling environment for our work,” Giwa said.
The Commissioner further praised the synergy between the Police, other security agencies, the Enugu State Forest Guards, the Neighbourhood Watch Group, and vigilant citizens who provided credible intelligence.
Restoring Trust in Public Safety
For many Enugu residents, the successful bust is more than just a police statistic—it is a restoration of confidence. A trader at Ogbete Market, Ngozi Okoro, told Fresh Facts Magazine: “We close our shops late, and the fear of being attacked on the way home was real. Knowing these people are off the streets means we can do our business with a little more peace of mind.”
Security analysts also note that the operation underscores the importance of community intelligence. “Crime syndicates thrive in silence. Once communities speak up, it becomes difficult for criminals to hide,” said Dr. Chike Anaba, a criminologist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Looking Ahead
While commending his officers for their professionalism and resilience, CP Giwa reminded them of the continuous nature of the work: “The best reward for good work is more good work,” he said, urging them to sustain the tempo of proactive policing.
As Enugu residents go about their daily activities, the bust serves as a reminder that while criminal elements may adapt their tactics, the security architecture of the state is also evolving to meet them head-on. For now, the sight of recovered vehicles parked at the Police Headquarters tells its own story—a symbol of a city reclaiming its safety, one stolen car at a time.
