Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has paid glowing tribute to Nigerian servicemen and women, commending their bravery, professionalism, and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation’s peace, unity, and security.
The governor spoke on Sunday during a solemn thanksgiving Mass held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, to flag off activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Observed annually on January 15, Armed Forces Remembrance Day honours members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who lost their lives in active service, as well as those currently serving the nation both locally and in international peacekeeping missions.
Addressing the congregation, Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the military, describing the remembrance as a unifying national event and a solemn reminder of the supreme sacrifices made by fallen heroes.
“This occasion is aimed at fostering unity and strengthening national security,” the governor said. “It is also a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to their fatherland. We must honour their memory by promoting peace, unity, and patriotism.”
The service drew military personnel, government officials, and residents of Awka, and reflected on the contributions of Nigerian soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian civil war, and various peace support operations across the world. It also recognised living veterans and families who have borne the hardships associated with war and military service.
In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, described Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a deeply solemn occasion dedicated to honouring lives laid down in service to the nation. Drawing a symbolic link between baptism and remembrance, the bishop said both reflect sacrifice and the preservation of life.
He urged Nigerians to rise above selfish interests and work collectively for the common good, stressing that national peace and unity depend on shared responsibility. The bishop also offered prayers for the safety of serving military personnel and other security operatives, as well as for their families, asking God to grant them strength and protection in the line of duty.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day remains one of Nigeria’s most significant national observances, celebrating both fallen and living heroes whose sacrifices continue to shape the country’s peace and security.
