The National Commission for Colleges of Education has approved the implementation of a Continuous Five-Year Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE)–Degree Programme for Colleges of Education operating the Dual Mandate system across the country.

The new academic structure, which will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, follows ministerial directives issued by the commission on May 5, 2026.

Under the arrangement, students will undergo a seamless five-year academic programme consisting of three years for the NCE qualification and an additional two years for a Bachelor’s degree programme.

According to the directive, students who successfully complete their NCE studies will now have the opportunity to proceed directly to 300 Level of the degree programme within the same institution and academic framework.

Education stakeholders have described the development as a major boost for teacher education in Nigeria, noting that it will simplify the transition process for NCE holders seeking university degree qualifications while reducing academic disruptions.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen the relevance of the NCE as the minimum teaching qualification in the country while expanding opportunities for professional growth among students in Colleges of Education.

Many students and education advocates have welcomed the policy, describing it as a progressive step towards improving the standard of teacher education and enhancing the capacity of Colleges of Education nationwide.

The development has also drawn commendation for the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Commission for Colleges of Education for introducing what many see as a more coordinated and flexible pathway for academic advancement in the education sector.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the implementation of the programme would encourage more students to pursue careers in teaching and contribute positively to the growth of the nation’s education system.
