The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, has called on Heads of Departments (HoDs) and Departmental Coordinators of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) to demonstrate greater commitment to their responsibilities in order to maximize the practical benefits of the programme for students.
Professor Asagba made the charge on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, during a one-day training workshop organised by the SIWES Directorate at the Dean’s Conference Room, Faculty of Education, Site III, Abraka. Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo, the Vice Chancellor commended the SIWES Directorate for sustaining high operational standards and initiating capacity-building sessions aimed at improving staff performance. He formally declared the training open.
In his welcome address, the Director of DELSU’s SIWES Directorate, Professor Sunday Efe, applauded the contributions of HoDs and Departmental Coordinators to the scheme’s success. He revealed that the university’s efforts were recognised nationally in 2024 when DELSU was named “Best SIWES Directorate in Nigerian Universities” by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), the federal body overseeing SIWES nationwide. Professor Efe also thanked the Vice Chancellor for his unwavering support and explained that the workshop was designed to equip participants with the skills needed to manage the scheme’s multifaceted operations more effectively.
The training featured a series of technical presentations by seasoned facilitators. Topics included:

- Conflict Resolution and Problem-Solving in SIWES — Dr Emmanuel Tonukari, SIWES Deputy Director
According to the organisers, the initiative aligns with the Vice Chancellor’s vision to promote staff development and ensure excellent service delivery in the university.
