As Nigeria inches closer to another critical democratic exercise, security agencies in Anambra State are intensifying preparations to ensure that the forthcoming gubernatorial election is conducted peacefully, credibly, and in full compliance with the law.
In a demonstration of proactive leadership and operational vigilance, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, on October 20, 2025, embarked on a comprehensive evaluation and confidence-building tour across the State’s Police formations. The exercise, which began at the Onitsha Area Command, was aimed at assessing officers’ readiness, operational discipline, and logistics capacity ahead of the November polls.
A Show of Leadership and Operational Presence
Accompanied by senior officers of the Command, CP Orutugu led a series of high-visibility patrols through major routes and strategic flashpoints across Onitsha and adjoining communities. The patrol, which drew the attention of local residents and business owners, served both as a reassurance of security and a deterrent signal to potential troublemakers.
At the Onitsha Area Command headquarters, the Commissioner addressed a cross-section of officers and men, reminding them of their sacred duty to protect lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process. He emphasized professionalism, neutrality, and adherence to the rule of law, urging officers to remain firm but fair in the discharge of their duties before, during, and after the election.
“We must uphold the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force at all times. Our actions during the election will determine public confidence in the process. Discipline, neutrality, and vigilance are non-negotiable,”

Commitment to Credible Elections
The Police Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections across the country. He disclosed that the Force Headquarters has put in place comprehensive operational guidelines and strategic deployment plans designed to neutralize threats, enhance inter-agency coordination, and safeguard election materials, personnel, and voters.
According to CP Orutugu, the Anambra Command has already activated joint intelligence platforms with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the military, to ensure seamless information flow and coordinated response to any emerging situation.
Inspection of Formations and Checkpoints
During the tour, CP Orutugu inspected several police formations, patrol units, and checkpoints to ensure that deployed officers were properly equipped and alert. He interacted with field operatives, reviewed deployment maps, and assessed communication tools, mobility assets, and logistics supply chains.
He commended officers for their dedication and the synergy already observed among security stakeholders, especially in flashpoint zones like Onitsha, Nkpor, and Obosi, where electoral violence had previously been a concern.
“Security is a collective responsibility,” the CP noted. “We acknowledge the cooperation of sister security agencies and community stakeholders who have consistently supported our efforts in maintaining peace and order.”

Public Confidence and Civic Responsibility
Beyond operational preparedness, CP Orutugu used the opportunity to reassure the people of Anambra State of the Command’s readiness to provide maximum security coverage throughout the election period. He appealed to political actors, voters, and youth groups to embrace peace, shun violence, and respect the democratic process.
“We are here to protect your right to vote freely and without fear,” he said. “Our officers are not instruments of intimidation but guardians of democracy.”
Residents of Onitsha and surrounding communities expressed appreciation for the visible police presence, describing it as a timely move that restores public confidence ahead of the polls.
A Test of Security Architecture and Institutional Neutrality
Observers note that the upcoming Anambra gubernatorial election will serve as a litmus test for Nigeria’s evolving security management framework in election contexts. In recent years, security agencies have faced increased scrutiny over issues of bias, operational excesses, and coordination lapses.
However, under CP Orutugu’s command, the Anambra State Police has demonstrated a renewed emphasis on strategic intelligence, community engagement, and institutional integrity, setting what many describe as a commendable example for other Commands.
As the countdown to election day continues, the Anambra Police Command remains on high alert, reinforcing its message of peace, professionalism, and vigilance. The Command’s ongoing patrols and evaluation exercises signal a clear intent — that the Nigeria Police Force is determined to deliver a secure, transparent, and credible electoral environment.
