As Nigeria gradually builds momentum toward the 2027 general elections, Barrister Eugene Azuka Uzum, popularly known as E.A. Uzumnism, has been described as a steady and principled civic voice whose engagement in public affairs continues to prioritise citizen welfare over political noise.

In a birthday message issued on Sunday, the management and staff of Fresh Facts Magazine praised the Delta State–based lawyer, policy consultant, and veteran public servant for what it described as his “consistent insistence that governance must begin and end with the people.” The statement was signed by the Editor-in-Chief, Comrade Monday Iyke Ojomah.

According to the magazine, Uzum has, in recent times, remained active in political and civic discourse, calling on political actors to de-escalate power struggles and refocus national attention on core governance issues such as employment, security, education, and institutional integrity.

A Public Service Career Rooted in Civic Orientation

Barrister Uzum’s career in public service has been largely defined by roles centred on civic education, public communication, and responsible governance. Trained as a lawyer and seasoned as a policy consultant, he rose through Delta State’s public service system to occupy strategic positions that placed him at the interface between government and citizens.

Under the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, he served as Special Adviser on Orientation and Director-General of the Delta State Bureau of Orientation, where he was responsible for communicating government policies in ways that encouraged public understanding, trust, and participation. Prior to that, he had served as Executive Assistant to the Governor on Orientation, a role that strengthened his expertise in public enlightenment and social mobilisation.

Fresh Facts Magazine noted that these roles went beyond ceremonial functions, requiring a balance between policy defence and citizen feedback—an approach that has remained central to Uzum’s public engagement.

Visible Leadership During the 2022 Flood Crisis

Uzum’s commitment to service was particularly evident during the 2022 flood disaster that affected several communities across Delta State. As a member of the Flood Disaster Management Committee, he played a coordinating role in relief efforts, risk mitigation, and public safety awareness.

For flood-affected residents, the intervention was not limited to emergency relief. It also involved real-time communication on evacuation procedures, safety measures, and government response strategies.

Federal Exposure and National Perspective

Beyond the state level, Uzum also served as Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals in Abuja. His role involved policy support and administrative coordination in a sector considered critical to Nigeria’s economic diversification.

The federal exposure, according to the magazine, broadened his understanding of national policy frameworks and reinforced his long-held belief that effective governance depends on strong coordination between federal and state institutions.

Advocate for Youth Empowerment and Institutional Reform

Fresh Facts Magazine further highlighted Uzum’s sustained advocacy for youth empowerment, noting his position that Nigeria’s future leadership must be deliberately prepared through education, ethical orientation, and civic responsibility—not merely through political mobilisation.

He has also been a vocal proponent of civil service professionalism, consistently calling for merit-based appointments and career progression within the Delta State Civil Service. Uzum has warned that excessive politicisation of professional institutions undermines efficiency, morale, and public trust.

Through regular media engagements and public commentary, he has maintained visibility on issues including human capital development, fiscal discipline, and governance accountability.

A Lasting Civic Imprint

In Asaba, Delta State capital, Uzum’s public service legacy is symbolically reflected in Barrister Eugene Uzum Crescent, a street named in his honour and home to the Delta State office of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Observers have described the coincidence as a reflection of his long-standing association with civic order and accountability.

Still Engaged, Still Relevant

Even outside formal government office, Uzum remains active in public discourse. His recent commendation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) governing board for what he described as a renewed commitment to transformational development was cited as evidence of his willingness to acknowledge progress where it occurs.

In its birthday message, Fresh Facts Magazine described Barrister Eugene Azuka Uzum as “a quieter but enduring force in public life—anchored in law, guided by policy, and driven by the conviction that public service is a moral obligation.”

The magazine wished him a happy birthday and expressed hope that his civic voice would continue to contribute to responsible governance and national development.
