As Nigeria prepares for a crucial round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has trimmed his squad, leaving out five familiar names.

Nigeria is set to face Rwanda and a South American opponent in back-to-back qualifiers that could prove decisive for the team’s chances of reaching the global showpiece. The Super Eagles currently trail group leaders South Africa by six points, but their hopes have been boosted with FIFA expected to deduct three points and three goals from the Bafana Bafana for fielding an ineligible player in their 2-0 win over Lesotho.

Chelle, determined to revive Nigeria’s campaign, has opted for what he considers the most reliable options. However, the list comes with notable omissions.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface, once tipped as a rising star for the national team, has been dropped after a series of underwhelming performances. His lack of club form, having lost his starting role in Germany, also counted against him.

In goal, Maduka Okoye is sidelined due to a ban imposed by the Italian FA over an ongoing betting-related investigation. Meanwhile, long-serving forward Kelechi Iheanacho and midfielder Joe Aribo have been overlooked, with both players facing uncertain futures at their respective clubs.

Defensive mainstay Semi Ajayi will also miss out after his English Championship club confirmed he would be sidelined for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury.

With the stakes higher than ever, Chelle is banking on fresh legs and consistent performers to keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.
