Stakeholders rally around 26th Ogwa Ika and 22nd Ika Ka Mma Annual Lecture Series as Otolokpo prepares for major cultural gathering

The people of Otolokpo Community in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State have expressed their readiness to host the 2026 edition of Ogwa Ika, describing the annual gathering as an important platform for strengthening unity, peace, cultural identity and development among the Ika people.
The much-anticipated event is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Otolokpo Community Hall, Otolokpo, beginning at 10:00 a.m. prompt.
The event, which incorporates the 26th Ogwa Ika and 22nd Ika Ka Mma Annual Lecture Series, is being organised under the theme: “Governance and Peace Building in Ika Nation.”
The Local Organising Committee, through its Secretary, Moses Obiemeke, in the invitation to the general public, said the event would bring together traditional rulers, community leaders, professionals, government representatives and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting the Ika nation.
The invitation listed His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, as Guest of Honour, while Ambassador Joe Chiedu Keshi, described as a seasoned diplomat and conflict-resolution expert, is expected to deliver the lecture.
The Obi of Otolokpo, His Royal Majesty Obi Collins Alioma Ezenweali, alongside the Otolokpo Development Union and Ika nation, extended an invitation to members of the public to attend the gathering.
Otolokpo Ready for the Gathering
Speaking on the preparations, the Obi of Otolokpo, HRM Obi Collins Alioma Ezenweali, said the community was honoured to host an event capable of bringing together people from across the Ika nation.
According to him, the significance of Ogwa Ika goes beyond the hosting community, as it provides an opportunity for the Ika people to reflect on their shared heritage and discuss practical ways of promoting peace and development.
“Otolokpo is prepared to welcome our brothers and sisters from across Ika land. We see this gathering as an opportunity to reaffirm our unity, celebrate our heritage and have meaningful conversations about peace, good governance and the future of our people,” the traditional ruler said.
The monarch also called on sons and daughters of Ika nation, both at home and in the diaspora, to identify with the gathering and contribute positively to the development of the region.
A Platform for Peace and Development
The President-General of Otolokpo Community, Chief Barr. David Igbodo (AIG Rtd.), said the community was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the event was successfully hosted.
Igbodo emphasised that the theme of this year’s gathering was particularly relevant at a time when communities and societies were searching for sustainable approaches to peaceful coexistence and responsible leadership.
“The theme, ‘Governance and Peace Building in Ika Nation,’ is very timely. No meaningful development can take place where there is no peace, and good governance must be built on accountability, justice, inclusion and respect for the people,” he said.
He added that the event would provide an avenue for participants to exchange ideas and examine how traditional institutions, government, community organisations and individuals could work together to strengthen peace and development.
Alizor: Ika Unity Must Remain a Priority
Another prominent community leader, Elder Chuks Alizor, described the forthcoming Ogwa Ika as an opportunity for the people to renew their commitment to unity and collective progress.
Alizor said the gathering should not be viewed merely as an annual cultural event, but as a forum where important issues concerning the future of the Ika people could be discussed.
“Our strength is in our unity. Ogwa Ika gives us the opportunity to come together, listen to one another and remind ourselves that, regardless of our different communities and backgrounds, we have a common identity and a common destiny,” he said.
He urged participants to approach the gathering with an open mind and a commitment to finding solutions to challenges confronting the Ika nation.
Otolokpo’s Cultural Heritage in Focus
Otolokpo is a traditional community in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, with cultural ties to Umunede, Ute-Okpu and Mbiri, among other communities that make up the wider Ika cultural landscape.
The 2026 Ogwa Ika is therefore expected to provide an avenue for cultural interaction, intellectual engagement and community networking.
With the theme focusing on governance and peace building, organisers are expected to place considerable emphasis on the role of traditional institutions, political leadership, community organisations, youth and other stakeholders in building a more peaceful and prosperous Ika nation.

As preparations intensify, Otolokpo is already gearing up to receive guests for what community leaders describe as a significant gathering of the Ika people.
For the people of Otolokpo, the hosting of Ogwa Ika 2026 is both an honour and a responsibility.
The Local Organising Committee has consequently called on the general public, particularly sons and daughters of Ika nation, traditional rulers, community leaders and stakeholders, to participate in the programme.
