Super Eagles midfielder and stand-in captain, Wilfred Ndidi, has been appointed vice-captain of Beşiktaş FC of Turkey. The announcement was made on Friday in an official statement released by the club’s board of directors.
Ndidi will serve as deputy to Turkish international Orkun Kökçü, who has been named the new team captain. The pair take over leadership duties from former captain Necip Uysal and vice-captain Mert Günok, both of whom have been lauded for their years of service and contribution to the team.
According to the club’s statement, the decision was based on the recommendation of the technical team and the players’ influence both on and off the pitch.
“With the decision of our President Serdal Island and the Board of Directors, changes have been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team. Based on the recommendation of our technical team and the effectiveness of players on the field, Orkun Kökçü has been appointed as first captain and Wilfred Ndidi as second captain,” the statement read.
Beşiktaş also expressed appreciation to the outgoing leaders while extending best wishes to Kökçü and Ndidi as they take up their new roles.
Since his arrival at Beşiktaş earlier this year, Ndidi has impressed both fans and management with his discipline, composure, and work rate in midfield. His leadership credentials were already well established from his time with Leicester City in the English Premier League, where he spent several seasons as one of the club’s most consistent performers, and with the Nigerian national team, where he currently serves as stand-in captain in the absence of regular skipper Ahmed Musa.
Known for his calm authority, professionalism, and tireless defensive play, Ndidi’s appointment is seen as a testament to his growing influence within the Turkish Super Lig. Many analysts believe the move underscores Beşiktaş’s confidence in his ability to inspire the squad both in domestic and continental competitions.
The new captaincy duo will begin their tenure when Beşiktaş, currently sixth on the Turkish Super Lig table with 13 points from seven matches, host Gençlerbirliği S.K. on Saturday, October 18, in Matchday 8 of the season.
