The Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday decorated 89 Inspectors with the new rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), marking a major step in their professional progression within the Nigeria Police Force.
The ceremony, held at the Command Headquarters in Awka, drew senior officers, family members, and well-wishers. Beyond their decoration, the officers were officially inducted into the Police Officers’ Mess—an important tradition symbolizing their transition into the officer cadre.
Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, represented at the event by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Mantu Chong, congratulated the officers and reminded them that the promotion was both a reward for hard work and a call to greater responsibility.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, approved these promotions in recognition of your dedication and sacrifices,” he said. “Promotion comes with higher expectations. You must now justify the confidence reposed in you by ensuring effective service delivery and upholding the values of honesty, fairness and accountability.”
The CP also tasked the officers to provide leadership for their subordinates and to strengthen collaboration with communities in addressing security challenges across Anambra State.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, ASP Oliji Alfred expressed appreciation to the Police Service Commission and Force Headquarters for finding them worthy of elevation. He assured that the newly promoted officers would intensify their commitment to duty and live up to the demands of their new ranks.
Career Significance of ASP Rank
The rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police is the first commissioned officer rank in the Nigeria Police Force, making it a key milestone in the career path of Inspectors. It provides a platform for officers to take up greater supervisory and administrative responsibilities, and to lead operational teams in crime prevention and law enforcement.
