A Nigerian national, Osemwengie Irorere, has been shot dead inside a public bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, in what authorities have described as a fatal shooting incident.

The victim, aged 46, was killed on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., at the bus terminal located around Yorkdale Road and Allen Road, according to information obtained by Fresh Facts Magazine.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Toronto Police Service disclosed that a 40-year-old suspect, identified as Tyrel Gibson, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

In a statement, the police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at the terminal and found Irorere suffering from a gunshot wound inside a GO bus.

“It is alleged that the victim and the suspect both boarded a GO bus at the terminal, where the suspect shot the victim before fleeing the area on foot,” the police stated.

Emergency responders reportedly carried out life-saving measures upon arrival, but Irorere was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police further revealed that Gibson, who is a resident of Toronto, was apprehended shortly after the incident, with a firearm recovered during the arrest.

“The suspect was located and arrested by officers a short time later, and a firearm was recovered. The victim has been identified as Osemwengie Irorere, 46, of Nigeria,” the statement added.

Investigators noted that Gibson was formally charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear before the court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.

The killing has sparked concern among Nigerians in the diaspora, coming less than two weeks after another Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in London, United Kingdom, on New Year’s Eve.

Onetufo was reportedly attacked in the Lewisham area of London and found with multiple stab wounds to the chest after police received a distress call. Despite efforts by paramedics to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The UK Metropolitan Police later confirmed that one suspect has been charged in court in connection with Onetufo’s murder.

The twin tragedies have renewed calls for greater attention to the safety of Nigerians living abroad, as well as sustained engagement between host governments and immigrant communities to address rising concerns over violent crimes.
