In a dramatic rescue mission that underscores the importance of public safety awareness, the Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully rescued a 68-year-old man who fell into a deep well while attempting to retrieve his mobile phone.
The incident occurred at the Mobolorunduro Mosque located in the Molefalafia area of Oke-Ado, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. According to official reports, the elderly man, acting out of desperation and unaware of the grave risks, descended into the well in a bid to recover his phone. Unfortunately, he became trapped and was unable to climb back out.
Upon receiving the distress call, operatives of the Oyo State Fire Services, under the leadership of Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Mrs. Adedeji, promptly mobilized to the scene. Demonstrating professionalism and speed, the firemen employed safety ropes and executed the rescue operation with caution and expertise.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Service Reform and Chairman of the Agency, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Ibadan. He attributed the accident to ignorance and a lack of awareness about the dangers involved in entering wells without proper training or equipment.
“The man was rescued alive and immediately handed over to his family for medical attention and care,” Hon. Akinwande said. He used the opportunity to caution members of the public against engaging in risky activities, particularly those that involve confined or hazardous spaces.
“This incident should serve as a wake-up call. We urge the public to always prioritize their safety over material possessions. A phone can be replaced, but a life lost cannot be recovered,” he added.
The agency reiterated its commitment to responding swiftly to emergencies while continuing public education on fire and safety hazards across the state.
