The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) has strongly condemned what it described as a “gestapo-like invasion” of its Abeokuta premises by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the early hours of Sunday.
According to a statement issued by OOPL Managing Director, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, heavily armed EFCC operatives, led by one “Olapade,” stormed the library’s amusement facility during a private, pre-advertised event, allegedly firing shots and causing chaos. The incident reportedly left several attendees injured as they scrambled for safety.
OOPL maintained that the event organisers had engaged police officers, including reinforcements from Kemta Police Station, and accused the EFCC of failing to present any warrant or notify security personnel on duty.
“This action by the EFCC is a clear invasion of private property, a violation of our rights as a corporate citizen, and an infringement on the fundamental rights of those present,” Ortese stated, adding that management would seek legal redress if the agency fails to issue an unreserved apology.
The library further revealed that it has commenced investigations and will escalate the matter to relevant security and oversight authorities, including the Department of State Services (DSS).
Meanwhile, the EFCC, in a statement on its official X handle, confirmed the operation, stating that its Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 arrested 93 suspected internet fraudsters in Abeokuta on Sunday, August 10, 2025. The commission said the suspects were apprehended following “credible intelligence” and that 18 vehicles and several mobile devices were recovered.
The anti-graft agency added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
