The coffin of Kenya’s iconic opposition leader, Raila Amolo Odinga, arrived by helicopter on Saturday at a packed stadium in his political stronghold of western Kenya, as tens of thousands of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to the man many have described as the soul of Kenya’s democratic struggle.

The late Odinga, fondly called “Baba” by supporters, was more than a politician—he was a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and unyielding faith in a just and inclusive Kenya. His arrival at the stadium was met with tears, chants, and songs that echoed through the air as the crowd surged forward, with AFP journalists reporting moments of chaos when mourners breached a security gate and scaled walls to catch a final glimpse of their fallen hero.

Born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, Raila Odinga spent over four decades shaping Kenya’s political landscape. As the son of Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, he inherited a legacy of activism and public service. Raila’s political journey was marked by detentions, betrayals, and near-victories—each deepening his bond with the masses who saw in him the embodiment of their hopes.

From his early involvement in the fight for multiparty democracy to his leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Odinga remained a steadfast advocate for electoral justice, constitutional reforms, and national unity. Though he never realized his long-held dream of the presidency, his influence transcended titles. To millions, he was the people’s president—a man who gave voice to the marginalized and stood tall against oppression.

His funeral procession has since become a national event, uniting supporters and former rivals alike in mourning a statesman whose vision for a fairer Kenya continues to inspire generations.

As Kenya bids farewell to Raila Odinga, the crowd’s chants—“Baba forever!”—serve as a poignant reminder that though the man may be gone, his ideals of democracy, peace, and equality will endure in the nation’s collective memory.
