The final whistle has sounded for Nigerian football icon, Christian Chukwu, popularly known as “Chairman,” as he was laid to rest on Saturday in his country home, Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Chukwu, a former Super Eagles captain and coach who passed away on April 12 at the age of 74, was celebrated with nearly 10 days of tributes and ceremonies in Lagos and Enugu, culminating in his burial.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, while paying his last respects, described Chukwu as a man of humility, discipline, and dignity whose life inspired many.
“For me, and I believe for so many as well, it is difficult for you to have met Chairman without being inspired by his simplicity and humility,” Mbah said. “As a government, we are going to always stand by his family and ensure that Chukwu is immortalised, for indeed he served and loved Enugu and Nigeria with all his heart.”

Earlier, the Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, praised Chukwu’s contribution to football and humanity. He recalled the defender’s leadership with Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles, including his role in Nigeria’s historic first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980.
“Chukwu was a strong man who led his team on many battles and won,” Ike said, describing him as a generous man whose kindness extended beyond his family to his church and community.

Chukwu’s storied career earned him both national and continental recognition. After captaining Nigeria to the 1980 AFCON title, he received a national honour that same year. In 2012, his outstanding achievements were further celebrated when he was conferred with the prestigious African Football Legend Award.

On behalf of the family, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr. expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, ex-players, and fans who gathered to honour his father.

The burial drew an impressive roll call of personalities, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau (represented by Nigeria National League Chairman, Mr. George Aluo), and Senator Victor Umeh. Others included members of the Enugu State Executive Council, the retired Archbishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, ex-Rangers stars, and sports administrators.

Born in Enugu, Christian Chukwu rose to become one of Nigeria’s greatest defenders, revered for his leadership, discipline, and defensive mastery. He not only led Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles to glory but also served as coach of both teams, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Nigerian football.

As his coffin was lowered into the earth in Obe, the tributes underscored one truth: “Chairman” was not just a football legend—he was a symbol of leadership, humility, and service whose legacy will endure in Nigerian sports and beyond.
