A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mr. Woleola O. Ibrahim, has called on the leadership of the party to present retired Brigadier General Biodun Bashir Adewinmbi as its senatorial candidate for Osun West ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Ibrahim, who hails from Ward 04 in Ede North Local Government Area, made the appeal in a statement where he emphasized the need for the party to prioritize equity, loyalty, and strategic positioning in selecting its flagbearer.
According to him, the decision on who emerges as the APC candidate for Osun West will play a critical role in determining the party’s electoral success in the district. He urged both state and national leaders of the party to conduct what he described as an objective assessment of Adewinmbi’s contributions to the growth of the APC, particularly at the grassroots level.
The party stalwart noted that Adewinmbi has remained active in mobilizing support for the APC in Ede and surrounding communities, even in what he described as a challenging political environment. He alleged that there have been attempts by opposing political interests to discourage support for the APC in the area but maintained that the retired general has continued his engagement with party members undeterred.
Highlighting the political dynamics in Ede, Ibrahim pointed out that Adewinmbi operates within a highly competitive landscape but has sustained regular meetings, mobilization drives, and outreach efforts aimed at strengthening the party’s base.
He further described Adewinmbi as a loyal founding member of the APC who has consistently demonstrated commitment since the party’s formation in 2013. According to him, such dedication should be rewarded with the party’s senatorial ticket.
Ibrahim also made a case for zoning and inclusion, arguing that Ede, as a significant political bloc in Osun West Senatorial District, deserves consideration in the party’s candidate selection process.
“On the grounds of fairness and equity, it is only just that Ede be given a tangible stake in the party’s future,” he stated, adding that Adewinmbi possesses the leadership capacity and political experience required to mount a strong challenge in the senatorial race.
He further claimed that the retired military officer enjoys broad acceptance across different segments of society, positioning him as a viable candidate capable of uniting party members and attracting wider voter support.
The appeal comes as political activities gradually intensify in Osun State ahead of upcoming elections, with parties expected to begin internal processes for the selection of candidates.
While the APC leadership has yet to make any official pronouncement regarding its senatorial ticket for Osun West, Ibrahim urged party stakeholders to “rise above parochial interests” and adopt what he described as a pragmatic approach in choosing a candidate.
Observers note that the contest for the Osun West senatorial seat is likely to attract significant interest, with multiple aspirants expected to vie for the position across party lines.
For now, calls such as Ibrahim’s reflect ongoing consultations and lobbying within party ranks as stakeholders position themselves ahead of what promises to be a competitive political season in the state.
