As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, retired Brigadier General Biodun Bashir Adewinmbi has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity, patriotism, good governance and the collective development of the country.
Adewinmbi, who is the National Adviser, Tinubu Torch Bearers (TTB) and Baba Oba of Ekuro Land, made the call in his Independence Day message to Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora.
He congratulated Nigerians on the anniversary, describing the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence on October 1, 1960.
According to him, Nigeria’s 66-year journey has been marked by “triumphs, challenges, sacrifices, resilience and progress,” noting that the country has continued to evolve through different political and historical periods.
He recalled the nation’s transition from the First Republic through the Civil War, military administrations and successive democratic eras, stressing that the resilience of Nigerians has remained a defining feature of the country’s national experience.
As a retired military officer, Adewinmbi paid special tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies who, both past and present, have contributed to the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and security.
He also remembered fallen military personnel and other security operatives who, according to him, “paid the ultimate price” in service to the nation.
Adewinmbi said the 66th anniversary should not merely be viewed as a celebration, but also as a moment for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of previous generations and their responsibility to build a stronger nation for future generations.
“At 66, our greatest responsibility is to build on the sacrifices of the past and create a better future,” he said.
He identified Nigeria’s diversity, youthful population, human resources and natural endowments as important national assets that, if properly harnessed, could accelerate development.
The retired general called for greater commitment to unity, good governance, justice, patriotism, hard work and national development, saying these values were essential to building the Nigeria envisioned by its citizens.
He urged Nigerians to celebrate the country’s independence by reflecting on their shared identity and common aspirations while maintaining hope for a more prosperous future.
“Let us celebrate not only our independence, but also our shared identity, resilience and hope for a greater Nigeria,” he stated.
Adewinmbi also prayed for the continued peace and prosperity of Nigeria, asking God to bless the nation’s leaders, protect members of the Armed Forces and strengthen citizens across the country.
He concluded his message with a call for Nigerians to honour the country’s history while remaining focused on its future.
“Nigeria at 66: We honour our past, celebrate our present and look to the future with renewed hope,” he said.
Adewinmbi also extended Independence Day greetings to the people of Osun State and Osun West Senatorial District, wishing Nigerians peace, progress and prosperity.
