— Vows Partnership in the Fight Against Cultism and Drug Abuse

The serene campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, came alive recently as the Advocate for Good Governance in Nigeria (AFGIN) honoured the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Azuka Kate Omenugha, with the prestigious “Icon of Hope to Humanity Award.”
The award, presented on behalf of AFGIN’s Executive Director, H.E. Amb. Dr. Awalu Malik, by the organization’s Director of Programs, Dr Ojomah Monday celebrated Professor Omenugha’s exceptional contributions to education, leadership, and societal transformation in Nigeria.
A Woman of Vision and Impact
In his address, the AFGIN Director of Programs described Professor Omenugha as “an exemplary academic, a visionary administrator, and a transformational leader whose life and service embody integrity, resilience, and excellence.”
He noted that AFGIN, since its inception in November 2018, has remained committed to identifying and celebrating leaders whose impact transcends titles and personal ambition.
“In Professor Omenugha, we have found a leader whose intellectual depth, moral strength, and innovative leadership have redefined university governance in Nigeria,”
the Director said.
He further highlighted her landmark achievements in academic research, infrastructural transformation, human capital development, student-focused leadership, and community partnership, describing her as “a model of transparent and purposeful governance.”
Celebrating Transformative Leadership
The citation accompanying the award detailed how Professor Omenugha’s administration has repositioned COOU as a hub for intellectual innovation through enhanced research funding, cross-institutional collaborations, and a strengthened research culture.
Her emphasis on human capital development, staff welfare, and student mentorship has, according to AFGIN, “built a generation of scholars and professionals capable of competing globally while contributing locally.”

the organization stated.
The “Icon of Hope to Humanity Award”, according to AFGIN, is not given lightly—it is reserved for men and women whose leadership inspires hope and whose integrity strengthens the moral fabric of society.
VC Commends AFGIN’s Integrity and Vision
In her response, a visibly elated Professor Azuka Kate Omenugha thanked AFGIN for what she described as “a deeply humbling and meaningful recognition.”
She praised the organization for its noble contributions to governance and youth development in Nigeria, noting that AFGIN’s programs on anti-cultism and the fight against drug abuse resonate strongly with her philosophy of education as a tool for moral and social reformation.
“Education must go beyond classrooms and certificates—it must build character, shape values, and create responsible citizens. That is why I find AFGIN’s advocacy against cultism and drug abuse particularly inspiring,” she said.
The Vice Chancellor pledged that COOU would partner with AFGIN to expand these campaigns within the university community and beyond, especially through mentorship and civic engagement initiatives targeted at young people.
“Together, we can build safer campuses, healthier youths, and a more responsible society,”
she affirmed.
Professor Omenugha also commended AFGIN for its non-monetary and merit-based approach to award selection, describing it as “a refreshing departure from the trend of commercialized recognitions.”
“Your award process restores dignity to excellence and integrity to honour. That is what makes this recognition truly special to me,” she added warmly.
Stakeholders React
Several dignitaries and stakeholders who spoke with Fresh Facts Magazine after the program, praised both the honouree and the organizers for their commitment to value-driven leadership.
Dr. (Mrs.) Ifeoma Ezeokafor, a senior lecturer at COOU, said the recognition was well-deserved:

Comr Sebastian Ikpoza, a Director of AFGIN’s Media and Publicity Department, noted that the organization’s partnership with academic institutions like COOU would strengthen its grassroots programs.
“Our focus has always been on character reorientation and civic responsibility among youths. Collaborating with COOU will help us reach thousands of students directly,” he said.
For Comr. Kizito C. Okemadu , President of the COOU Students’ Union Government (SUG), the award reflected what students already know:
“Our Vice Chancellor is more than an administrator; she is a mentor and a mother. This honour shows that the world is watching and appreciating her work.”

The ceremony, which drew academics, student leaders, and representatives of civil society, ended with a symbolic presentation of the award plaque and a photo session that captured smiles, gratitude, and renewed purpose.
As the event concluded, many in attendance agreed that Professor Omenugha’s recognition as an “Icon of Hope to Humanity” is not only a personal milestone but also a reaffirmation that integrity and service still define the best of Nigerian leadership.
