Andre Onana’s future as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper is under serious scrutiny after another calamitous performance in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw against Lyon. According to a club insider, several United players are growing increasingly frustrated with the Cameroonian international, particularly after his two costly errors handed the French side a lifeline in the tie.
Onana’s performance raised eyebrows yet again after he fumbled a routine cross that led to Lyon’s opener and then misjudged a long-range effort, allowing the hosts to equalize late in the game. The mistakes came just days after the 29-year-old was embroiled in a war of words with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labelled him “the worst goalkeeper in the club’s history.”
Rather than ignoring the criticism, Onana took to social media, boasting about his silverware at Old Trafford. However, those words quickly backfired. A source inside the club told The Sun:
“Some of the players are really pissed off with him. You tempt fate when you say things like he did and then you end up looking silly if it comes back and bites you. Some wonder if it’s time for Altay Bayındır to be given a go.”
Team morale appears to be shifting, with reports suggesting that several United stars were reluctant to console Onana in the dressing room following the game. His teammates reportedly see his recent behavior and performances as both distracting and detrimental to the team’s ambitions.
Adding to the uncertainty, manager Ruben Amorim gave little public backing to his embattled goalkeeper after the match.
“There is nothing I can say to Andre that will help,” the Portuguese boss said bluntly. “We should’ve been going back to Manchester with a one-goal lead.”
As pressure mounts and calls grow louder for a change between the posts, Onana’s place in the starting lineup is no longer secure—with Altay Bayındır waiting in the wings for a chance to prove himself.
