In a gesture that caught many by surprise, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, on Wednesday, April 24, 2025, presented Letters of Commendation to sixteen officers of the command for their exceptional performance, unwavering dedication, and outstanding service delivery in the fight against crime across the state.

The brief but significant ceremony, held at the Police Headquarters in Asaba, saw senior officers and operatives in attendance as the CP publicly acknowledged the contributions of the officers, especially the gallant efforts of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) led by .

At the top of the commendation list was ASP Julius Robinson, Commander of the CP-Special Assignment Team, who alongside his team was deployed to Ughelli in April 2024 on a special crime-fighting mission. Their mandate: to stem the rising tide of kidnappings and armed robberies plaguing Ughelli, Warri, Sapele, Oghara, and other parts of the state.

In his remarks, CP Abaniwonda applauded ASP Robinson and his operatives for not only meeting but exceeding expectations. He noted that their operations have significantly restored calm and security to several hotspot areas, earning the admiration and confidence of both the police leadership and the public.

According to the CP, in just one year, the CP-Special Assignment Team has recorded several notable achievements, including:

  • Recovery of twenty-four (24) AK-47 rifles
  • Recovery of four (4) K2/G3 rifles
  • Recovery of twenty-one (21) pump action guns
  • Recovery of thirty-two (32) locally made guns
  • Recovery of fifteen (15) suspected stolen vehicles
  • Seizure of five hundred and sixty (560) rounds of ammunition and cartridges

Describing the team’s efforts as exemplary, the CP noted that such unwavering commitment is worthy of emulation by officers across the force. Other decorated members of the CP-SAT team include Inspector Joel Osunniran, Inspector Ofumana Samson, Inspector Paul Mamman, Corporal Layefa God’sgrace, and Woman Police Constable Isanmi Naomi, among others.

Another highlight of the day was the commendation bestowed on Woman Corporal Nwokolo Mercy Uche, a widely celebrated traffic officer known for her professionalism and commitment while on duty in Warri.

The CP recounted an inspiring moment on April 16, 2025 — W/CPL Nwokolo’s birthday — when traders and residents at Warri Main Market spontaneously celebrated her at Robert Junction. Their reason was simple: her consistent display of dedication, kindness, and professionalism while managing traffic in the bustling market area had touched many lives.

In his address, CP Abaniwonda praised W/CPL Nwokolo for becoming a symbol of what community policing should look like. He noted that her conduct has brought honour not just to the Delta State Command but to the entire Nigeria Police Force. Her recognition, he emphasized, serves as a reminder that officers who connect with the public in humane and professional ways are assets to the force.

Speaking on behalf of all the awardees, ASP Julius Robinson expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, for equipping the command with the tools and support necessary to fight crime effectively. He also extended his appreciation to CP Abaniwonda, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and other senior officers for fostering a conducive work environment.

“We will not relent in our duties,” ASP Robinson affirmed. “We are fully aware that the reward for hard work is more work. We remain committed to ensuring that Delta State continues to enjoy peace and safety.”

With this commendation ceremony, CP Abaniwonda has once again reaffirmed the command’s dedication to promoting excellence and professionalism within the ranks. By recognizing both the tactical brilliance of crime-fighting units and the humane service of everyday officers, the Delta State Police Command continues to build public trust and institutional pride.
