In a quiet corner of Delta State, where community service often goes unnoticed, one man continues to shine brightly—offering leadership, compassion, and an unflinching voice for justice. That man is Dr. Kingsley Ojie, a medical doctor, church pastor, politician, and most notably, a passionate advocate for the Anioma people. In recognition of his contributions to humanity, Advocates for Good Governance in Nigeria (AFGIN), led by Dr Ojomah Monday from Lagos, recently honoured him as an Icon of Hope to Humanity.
In an exclusive interview with Fresh Facts Magazine, Dr. Ojie welcomed us warmly and shared a compelling account of his life, leadership, and vision for his people.
Born and raised in Sapele, Dr. Ojie hails from Obiebete, an Ukwani-speaking community in Delta State. He belongs to the illustrious Ojie family and began his academic journey at St. Patrick’s Primary School, followed by St. Peter Clavers College (SPCC) Aghalokpe, where he completed his secondary education in 1976.
A brief stint as a teacher at Abbott Primary School gave him time to prepare for further studies. Between 1977 and 1979, he attended Edo College Benin-City, excelling in his Higher School Certificate examination. This achievement paved the way for a direct entry into the University of Ibadan, where he studied medicine and graduated with an MBBS degree in 1984.
After completing his horsemanship and National Youth Service at Nigerian Army barracks in what is now Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Ojie returned to Delta State and has been in private medical practice for nearly four decades. His clinic continues to serve communities with compassion and dedication.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Ojie also ventured into politics. He served as Vice Chairman of a local government area between 2014 and 2017, making impactful contributions at the grassroots level.
Alongside his professional journey, Dr. Ojie has served faithfully as a church pastor, providing spiritual guidance to many. But it is perhaps his work with Izu Anioma, the socio-political organization representing Anioma people that has truly defined his legacy.
About eight years ago, Dr. Ojie was elected the Interim National President of Izu Anioma, and later, the full President following the organization’s congress. Under his leadership, the group has continued to advocate for the rights and development of Anioma people—the Igbo-speaking indigenes of Delta North Senatorial District.
He proudly shares the organization’s deep historical roots, tracing back to 1939, when traditional leaders petitioned for an Anioma district. Izu Anioma, formed by great leaders such as Dennis Osadebe, Senator Nosike Ikpo, and Chief Dr. Orewa, continues to fight for political representation, resource control, and socio-economic development in Anioma land.
Dr. Ojie emphasized the glaring disparities in Anioma communities, especially in areas where oil companies operate:
“You see beautiful infrastructure inside company gates, but right outside, our people live in poverty—no electricity, no good roads, no basic amenities.”
While Izu Anioma is politically active, it remains non-partisan, choosing to support any candidate or policy that promotes the well-being of Anioma people. He recalled the organization’s role in ensuring that Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, an Anioma son, became governor of Delta State—breaking historical barriers and giving the region a stronger voice in state affairs.
“Though some may criticize him, Governor Okowa did a lot for our people. He empowered youth and invested in infrastructure. For that, we are grateful.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Ojie.and the Anioma community are advocating for the creation of Anioma State. This, he believes, will give Anioma people full control over their resources and governance.
Receiving the Icon of Hope to Humanity Award from the Advocate for Good Governance in Nigeria, came as a surprise to Dr. Ojie.
“I didn’t know that in our little corner here, people from faraway Lagos were watching. It means so much to us. Please convey my sincere gratitude to the leadership of your organization.”
He emphasized that the award aligns perfectly with the mission of Izu Anioma: good governance, social justice, and community development.
Dr. Kingsley Ojiie embodies a unique blend of professional excellence, spiritual leadership, and social activism. His life’s work serves as an inspiration—not just to Anioma people, but to Nigerians everywhere.
As Fresh Facts Magazine continues to spotlight heroes across Africa, we are proud to recognize Dr. Ojie for his unwavering commitment to hope, justice, and humanity.
