Asaba, Delta State — In a decisive onslaught against crime, the Delta State Police Command has dismantled a robbery syndicate, recovering a stolen Mercedes Benz GLK, dangerous firearms, and a cache of stolen property in a series of coordinated operations.

The clampdown, led under the watch of Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, also netted notorious suspects believed to be responsible for multiple armed robbery attacks across the state.

Luxury Vehicle Recovered in Asaba
On August 5, 2025, at about 5:40 p.m., officers of B Division, Asaba, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted a stolen Mercedes Benz GLK (registration number NZM 10 AP) at a parking lot on Former Deputy Road.

The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Edewor Akponegware, personally led the Crime Branch team to the location, arresting one Chinedu Eze, who was attempting to sell the vehicle to an unsuspecting buyer.

Investigations revealed the car was snatched at gunpoint in April 2023 at Abakpa, Enugu State, during which the rightful owner was shot. The vehicle, which had been dubiously re-registered in 2025, has now been returned to police custody.

Robbery Suspects Caught After Dawn Distress Call
Barely a day earlier, on August 4 at about 4:30 a.m., Ogwashi-Ukwu Police received a distress call reporting armed robbers operating along Chelsea Street in the town.

The DPO, CSP Okoyomon Israel, quickly mobilised the Anti-Crime Squad and local vigilantes to the scene. Two suspects — Thywill Selvin (22) of Poly Road, Ogwashi-Ukwu, and Guntim Bako (32) of Kwale Junction — were arrested after a brief chase.

Recovered from the suspects were:

  • One pump action rifle with one live cartridge
  • One Beretta pistol with six live rounds
  • Three live assault rifle ammunition
  • One Daylong motorcycle (SAP 369 VK)
  • One Qlink motorcycle (URM 750 QV)
  • 25 mobile phones, four laptops, a tablet, a PS4 console, a home theatre set, two Zealot music players, five bags of clothes, and other valuables.

Several victims have since identified their stolen items.

Police Warn Criminals, Urge Public Support
CP Abaniwonda commended the swift action of his officers, attributing the success to timely information from members of the public. He vowed that the Command would sustain aggressive, intelligence-led operations to keep communities safe.

“We will not relent in flushing out criminals from Delta State,” he assured, while urging residents to promptly report suspicious persons and activities, noting that “early reporting is key to preventing crime.”
